This course is the User-Centered Design (UCD-) approach that can be applied to most geo-information scientific activities (designing systems for data collection, databases, information systems, etc.).
Central to this course is the User-Centered Design (UCD-) approach that can be applied to most geoinformation scientific activities (designing systems for data collection, databases, information systems, models / simulations, maps etc.). Usability research of geographical information produced ("fitness for use") and the designed product, is just one element of this approach. As essential is the pre-design stage, which we call "use and user requirement analysis". This stage focuses on the business and user requirements such as the tasks the users have to execute and the geographical problems and specific questions that have to be addressed.
Specific attention will be paid to the plethora of scientific research methods and techniques that can be used for the requirement analysis and usability evaluation. Groups of participants will be required to produce (and share with the others) a technical report on a particular method / technique of use, user and usability research as applied in geo-information science.
Teach participants how to apply a User Centred Design approach in all stages of geo data collection, processing and dissemination. Introduce them to a selection of methods & techniques of use, user & usability research and teach them how to apply these in the geo domain.
Introductory lectures / Literature study / Get hands-on experience with selected methods. Techniques of user research as 1. a test person and 2. a test leader / Report writing and presentation (group work) on a particular user research technique (own choice).
User Centred Design / Use & users of geospatial data and geospatial data products and systems / Methods & techniques of use, user & usability research. Effectiveness, efficiency, fitness for use/purpose, user satisfaction / Requirement analysis / Usability evaluation.
