Program description

In this course, you are trained in use of remote sensing & GIS techniques for geological and mineral exploration. Sustainable development of a country's mineral resources is key in economic growth.

In this 18-week course, you are trained in the use of remote sensing and GIS techniques for geological and mineral exploration. Sustainable development of a country's mineral resources is generally seen as a key factor in economic growth.

The search for mineral resources relies on the availability of up-to-date geological knowledge bases, conceptual mineral deposit models and modern exploration technologies. In this course, an integrated approach is followed for upgrading geological maps, in which published geological maps are re-interpreted in a GIS environment on the basis of aerial photographs, satellite imagery and airborne geophysical data.

Subsequently, exploration data and deposit concepts are brought together for integration and analysis using GIS and modelling systems to assess mineral resources potential. The main subjects in this course are mineral deposit geology, geological remote sensing, exploration geochemistry, airborne geophysics, hyperspectral remote sensing and mineral prospectivity modelling.

Objectives
To train partiipants in GIS and remote sensing as applied to projects focused on exploration of earth resources (i.e. rocks, soils, minerals).

Instruction modes
Lectures, practicals, case studies, excursions, multi-disciplinary projects, individual/group assignments.

Curriculum
Airborne geohysics, exploration geochemistry, spectral remote sensing, geological mapping, mineral deposit geology, mineral prospectivity mapping.

Admission requirements

Previous education

BSc degree from a recognized university in earth sciences, geology, or other related disciplines (with college level algebra, chemistry and physics).

Professional experience

Some years of work expereince in geological exploration is preferred but not mandatory; basic knowledge of Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing.

IELTS overall band: 6.0, TOEFL computer based: 213, TOEFL internet based: 80, TOEFL paper based: 550, CAE: C1, CPE: C2
