Program description

The course will introduce you to integrated monitoring, assessment and modelling of water resources as well as applications in floods, droughts and irrigation.

The course consists of a total of six weeks in which integrated monitoring, assessment and modelling of water resources as well as applications in floods, droughts and irrigation are introduced.

The course start with a short introduction on modelling concepts. Different components of a modelling system will be addressed. Uncertainties in model processes, parameters and variables as well as model calibration and validation at different spatial and temporal scales will be addressed. Applications of the modelling approach to data poor area will be treated. Finally applications of the modelling approach in flood monitoring, drought assessment and land use will be worked out as case studies.

Special attention is given to the integration of Earth Observation data of water cycle variables conventional hydrometric data, vegetation properties and catchment characteristics in several example models.

Objectives
Understand different hydrologic modelling concepts & their application potential and limitations; Develop practical skills in setting-up, running and evaluating specific hydrological models.

Instruction modes
Lectures, computer exercises and demonstrations - Course content can be partly combined with Groundwater and Env. Hydrology short courses.

Curriculum
Set-up, run & evaluate various hydrological models; optimization techniques; use of specific software to evaluate irrigation water, drainage & salinization related aspects, evapotranspiration
