Program description

This course offers both the new and the experienced geological engineer specific knowledge on the application of environmental issues in geological engineering.

Many geological engineering activities are resulting either in or from changes in the environment. Construction activities directly influence the surrounding environment and often engineering geological measures are needed in the case of environmental or geohazard related damage. Many of these processes have a source or a component below the surface.

Understanding the spatial and temporal variations in physical parameters at the surface and in the subsurface therefore gives additional insight into these processes and their extent. This could be the extent of unconsolidated soil layers, faults, or the sliding planes of landslides.

The development of homogeneous 3D (sub)surface information systems is therefore important for various fields, such as environmental monitoring, geohazards and earth resources. This is carried out on the basis of bore hole data, CPT and field data, airborne- and satellite-based remote sensing data, and geophysical datasets, which are used to generate subsurface volumes in a 3D GIS environment.

Objectives
The course teaches how to apply GIS, remote sensing and gephysics with particular focus on the environmental impact of engineering geology activities.

Instruction modes
Lectures and computer tutorials, case studies, multi-disciplinary projects, group assignments, professional skills, company visits, final project.

Curriculum
Remote Sensing, Geophysics, Site investigations, Subsurface 3D modelling, geochemistry, geological hazards, slope stability, earthquake (engineering), Geographic Information Systems.
