Program description

Database technology is key when multiple users want to share data sources over prolonged periods of time.

Databases allow the storage of data, maintaining its consistency and up-to-date-ness, analyzing and deriving useful information from it. Databases are built to allow multiple users access at the same time, while guarding against inappropriate data use or data change. They also offer advanced computations with the data.

Spatial databases do all of the above while also offering support for spatial data, especially in vector format. They provide the best technology for maintaining spatial data sources, first and foremost in geoinformation projects with indefinite lifetime. The application of spatial database technology in projects that design and realize a spatial database is the topic of study in this module.

Objectives
In this module, we look at how to design a spatial database, and how to unlock the functional potential of it, by specifically working on the understanding and skills in spatial SQL.Database technology is needed when multiple users want to share data sources over prolonged periods of time. This is also true of spatial databases.

Admission requirements

Previous education

Knowledge of Principles of GIS, specifically spatial reference systems and vector data formats, and operations on vector data sets is required, as well as some experience in setting up a simple database (tables, attributes, primary keys, foreign keys).

Familiarity with SQL, working knowledge with GIS of some flavour is preferred.

Professional experience

None necessary, but previous experience with database operations is a plus.
