Program description

The University of Amsterdam's Philosophy programme is the most inclusive of its kind in the Netherlands. It covers a wide range of topics and perspectives, and has a strong international focus.

The programme familiarises students with one or more sub-areas of philosophy, and explores both Anglo-Saxon and European philosophy. Students acquire the skills to formulate, analyse and discuss philosophical problems, as well as to formulate and present targeted research questions within a broader research plan. Students can choose courses in philosophy from the wide selection of courses offered by the Department of Philosophy. Courses are grouped under the following topics: - The Philosophical Tradition in Context - Critical Cultural Theory: Art, Culture and Media - Philosophy and Public Affairs - Logic and Language: Mind, Body and Behaviour Philosophy at the UvA is highly regarded in terms of research and teaching quality, and was voted the best in the Netherlands for the second year running in the 2012 QS World University Rankings by Subject.

Admission requirements

Previous education

The Master’s in Philosophy is open to all students with a Bachelor’s diploma from the UvA, or a recognised equivalent from another accredited university in:
- Philosophy
The level of the Bachelor’s diploma from a foreign higher education institution must be equal to three years of Dutch university education (to be judged by the Examinations Board).
Prospective students with Bachelor’s degrees (university) other than those mentioned above can nonetheless apply for admission to the programme. The Examinations Board will in such cases take a look at the content of the prospective student’s Bachelor programme, his/her study results and general motivation.
