Program description

The University of Amsterdam's Philosophy programme is the most inclusive of its kind in the Netherlands. It covers a wide range of topics and perspectives, and has a strong international focus.

The programme familiarises students with one or more sub-areas of philosophy, and explores both Anglo-Saxon and European philosophy. Students acquire the skills to formulate, analyse and discuss philosophical problems, as well as to formulate and present targeted research questions within a broader research plan. Students can choose courses in philosophy from the wide selection of courses offered by the Department of Philosophy. Courses are grouped under the following topics: - The Philosophical Tradition in Context - Critical Cultural Theory: Art, Culture and Media - Philosophy and Public Affairs - Logic and Language: Mind, Body and Behaviour Philosophy at the UvA is highly regarded in terms of research and teaching quality, and was voted the best in the Netherlands for the second year running in the 2012 QS World University Rankings by Subject.

Previous education

Het masterprogramma Wijsbegeerte is toegankelijk voor studenten met een bachelordiploma van de UvA of een gelijkwaardig, erkend diploma van een andere universiteit in:
- Wijsbegeerte
Met een ander universitair bachelordiploma dan Wijsbegeerte, kun je je eveneens aanmelden, mits je een 60 EC minor Wijsbegeerte hebt behaald. De examencommissie kijkt bij toelating ook naar de invulling van je bachelor, je studieresultaten en je motivatie.

Previous education

Applicants for the Master's programme Philosophy should have at least a Bachelor's degree or its equivalent in:
- Philosophy
- or a relevant field.
Students who have a Bachelor's degree in a different field are also welcome to apply, provided this degree is comparable to a Dutch Bachelor's degree and has included a substantial number of philosophy courses (60 ECTS credits or more).

Grade average

An overall grade point average (GPA) of:
- B/3.0 (American system);
- 2.1 (upper second class degree in the British system);
- C (ECTS-system)or 7.0 (Dutch system).
