Program description

The Research Master's in Philosophy familiarises students with one or more sub-areas of philosophy, and offers an excellent opportunity to students who are interested in pursuing a PhD in Philosophy.

The programme covers a wide range of topics and perspectives, and has a strong international focus. Both Anglo-Saxon and European philosophy are studied. Students can choose to specialise in one of the following areas: - Philosophical Tradition in Context - Critical Cultural Theory - Philosophy and Public Affairs - Logic and Language Students acquire the skills to formulate, analyse and discuss philosophical problems, as well as to formulate and present targeted research questions within a broader research plan. The University of Amsterdam's Philosophy programme (research) is the most extensive of its kind in the Netherlands and has the largest student body. The programme covers a wide range of topics and perspectives, and has a strong international focus. It is also highly regarded in terms of research and teaching quality, and was voted the best in the Netherlands for the second year running in the 2012 QS World University Rankings by Subject.

Admission requirements

Previous education

The Research Master’s in Philosophy is open to all students with a Bachelor’s diploma from the UvA, or a recognised equivalent from another accredited university in:
- Philosophy
Prospective students with a Bachelor's degree in another subject may also apply for the programme if she/he has followed a Minor in Philosophy worth 60 ECTS credits.
The level of the Bachelor's diploma from a foreign higher education institution must be equal to three years of Dutch university education (to be judged by the Examinations Board).
After being accepted into the programme, prospective students with a relevant Master's degree, or relevant courses on a Master's level, can submit a request to the Examinations Board to follow a shortened version of the Research Master's in Philosophy.

- B (ECTS-system), or 7.5 (Dutch system).
