Program description

The Master's in Neuroscience and Cognition offers you a deep understanding of the complex ways in which the brain functions, through theoretical courses and research in multidisciplinary teams.

The master's degree in Neuroscience and Cognition is a continuation and extension of a bachelor's degree. The training centres on research of mental skills, like memory, perception or language and the influence of neuropathology on cognition. You work on a wide range of subject matters, ranging from research on genes and neuro-imaging to neurological and psychiatric disorders of patients.

The Master's programme in Neuroscience and Cognition gives you the theoretical, practical and research skills necessary to gain understanding of the complexities of normal and pathological brain function. The very breadth and multidisciplinary nature of Neuroscience demands that as a research practitioner, you must be able to synthesise information from different disciplines. So in addition to theory courses that provide the fundamentals of Neuroscience, and independent study leading to your Master's thesis, you will work in multidisciplinary research teams.

This two-year research programme offers four different Neuroscience tracks. A Major and Minor research project are required, and may be completed while working as a member of a research team or independently, with an option to complete the Minor project abroad. These research projects give you practical experience in scientific research, data analysis, and in writing reports and giving presentations. Graduates will find career opportunities in academic and research environments, teaching hospitals, and industry. About 25% of graduates find PhD positions at one of the three participating research institutes in Utrecht.
