Program description

The MA in General Linguistics also offers a sound basis for careers in the areas of clinical linguistics, curriculum development, language engineering, speech technology, artificial intelligence, etc.

General linguistics is the study of the universal properties of language as they manifest themselves in the language system, the language capacity of individual language users, the use of language in varying social circumstances and the application of linguistic knowledge in technological environments. The UvA has renowned specialists in all these areas and offers training through an integrated programme provided by the departments of Language Technology, Phonetics, Psycholinguistics and Language Pathology, Second Language Acquisition, Sign Linguistics and Theoretical Linguistics. The Master's in General Linguistics gives students the opportunity to specialise in one of the field's several sub-disciplines. All courses are taught in English, are task oriented and require a high degree of student involvement. Please note that this is not a programme in Applied Linguistics!
