This programme offers an analysis of the international legal order and of its core issues. It does so from the perspectives Public International law and Human Rights, and European Union Law.
International and European law are exerting and increasing influence on the contents of national legal systems in substantive as well as procedural matters. The European Union interacts directly with the legal systems of its Member States. International organisations such as the United Nations and the Council of Europe are platforms on which treaties are prepared, leading to new obligations for the states concerned.
This Master's programme offers an analysis of the international legal order and of the core issues of the new Millennium. It does so from two distinct perspectives: Public International law and Human Rights, and European Union Law. This programme educates for a variety of jobs in the academic world, international institutions (governmental as well as non-governmental), diplomacy, law firms and the business sector. Experience so far shows that former Tilburg University students being active in these sectors are highly appreciated, amongst other things because they have learnt to see that international and human rights law as well as European law is about much more than knowledge of the rules and case-law only.
Students can choose from one of 2 tracks: International Human Rights, European Union Law
International and Human Rights
In the International and Human Rights Law specialisation, you focus on core issues in the field of International and Human Rights Law. Recent developments within the preeminent international organisations are examined including the United Nations, the Council of Europe, the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court. You will come back to a pivotal question time and time again: how can States be made to implement, and comply with, their obligations?
European Union Law
In the European Union Law specialisation, you will examine the functioning of the EU and its decision-making processes, and the implications of this for national and international legal systems. You will come to understand the European integration process from a broad perspective, beyond its purely legal aspects.
