Program description

This 2-year research Master's programme offers students a thorough interdisciplinary training in the history of reflection on Western culture, science and society from 1500 A.D. to the present.

The Master's programme in Historical and Comparative Studies of the Sciences and Humanities provides students with an opportunity to understand from a broad and interdisciplinary perspective the history of Western thought since 1500 A.D. The programme attracts students from a variety of fields. Core courses in the first year, taught by professors who are experts in the Humanities, Medicine, Social and Natural Sciences, familiarise students with the social orientations, types of institutionalisation, and scientific methods of these disciplines. This period creates a discipline-specific base that enables you to successfully integrate these disciplines later in the curriculum, during the Academic Specialisation. You go on to a trimester in which you study abroad or do an internship at a Dutch or foreign research institute. The programme culminates in the writing of an independently-researched Master's thesis. As a graduate of this programme you will be able to formulate a research proposal for a PhD project, or to find employment in positions that require broad academic expertise in the field of history, for example at scientific research and advisory institutions.
