Program description

In this programme students investigate the nature of Europe and the development of the idea of Europe that ultimately led to the founding of the European Union.

The Master's programme European Studies: Identity and Integration offers insight into various aspects of European identity and the process of European integration. Students examine Europe and the development of the idea of Europe, and in turn trace the founding of the European Union. By exploring the borders, images and policies of Europe, the programme aims to provide students with an in-depth knowledge of modern European history, culture and integration. Perceptions of Europe and policy-making processes are the primary themes of European Studies at the UvA. How do Europeans perceive themselves? What structures past or present contribute to the realisation of a political, legal and economic order? Within European Studies there is a special emphasis on culture in Europe. The lecturers and researchers who form part of the programme have extensive expertise in various aspects of Europe, both past and present.
