The Master in Conflict and Security Law takes a comprehensive approach to international law in the area of conflict and security, addressing these issues in an interdisciplinary manner.
In an age when politics are often international, and conflicts can quickly become global, how can international laws and treaties contribute to establishing stability and peace? Who sets the rules for the world to follow? And how can the rule of law be effectively enforced?
This LLM aims to set human conflict within a legal framework by finding law-based responses to issues that threaten human rights, political stability and international security. Exploring areas such as international terrorism, arms control, peacekeeping and international criminal law, this programme offers a unique focus on a globally important area of law.
The Master programme in Conflict and Security Law is offered as a collaboration of Utrecht University and The University of Sheffield. The programme combines areas of exepertise from both universities. You learn to solve interdisciplinary problems, and to perform independent research. Such issues as collective security, peacekeeping law, international humanitarian law, laws governing international terrorism, international criminal and arms control law are covered. This one year taught programme begins with a semester in Utrecht, during which you acquire foundational knowledge through a number of mandatory, jointly-taught courses such as Theory of International Law and Organisation, International Criminal Courts, and International and European Security Law.
During the second semester in Sheffield you build on what you have learned, and follow optional courses such as Peacekeeping Law and Practice and Freedom, Security and Justice in the EU. You finish the programme by writing a final Master thesis on your independent research.
