The MA in Communication and Information Sciences offers a unique program in which you learn about how people acquire and transfer information and how new means of communication can be used innovative.
The Communication and Information Sciences program is intended for highly talented and motivated students with a keen sense of intellectual curiosity and intellectual ambition. In this Master's programme, you will encounter state of the art research in the broad interdisciplinary field of communication. The point of departure is natural communication: how is information transferred from one person to another? For what purpose? You will participate in a wide range of courses such as communication strategies, non-verbal communication and computer vision.
This unique combination of approaches and research traditions will enable you to work as a communication expert, and answer questions such as:
- What is the best way to present information to an audience?
- How do people communicate within an organization?
- How can you influence people's behaviour through language?
You take a particular interest in language and you are seeking to broaden and deepen your academic knowledge. You are interested in the many different aspects of communication such as the effect that words can have, how people produce language and linguistic phenomena such as metaphors, and the stories behind them.

The one-year program in Communication and Information Sciences offers five different specializations:
Business Communication & Digital Media
In the Master's specialization Business Communication and Digital Media, you will focus on communication issues in the area of business communications. You will research how people use in different ways to communicate with each other, and how they process information through language, pictures, sound and computers.

One of the essential parts of information transaction and communication is text, verbal or written. One of the purposes of texts is to inform or convince depending on the communication objectives. Communication designers research different factors that influence the effectiveness of texts as communication tools. These factors can be textual characteristics, such as style and structure, but also the conversation characteristics and influence of non-verbal communication. Furthermore, the context and purpose of a text and how readers process information also play a major role in communication.

In the Master's specialization Data Journalism, you will explore the opportunities of data journalism from four angles: data retrieval, data storytelling, data visualization and data publishing. It combines the scientific methods of data treatment with the core values of journalism: select, arrange, digest and reflect. This specialization puts strong focus on online and social media based journalism.

How can we make sure that people get the exact information or (access to) the knowledge that they require? What technologies do we have at our disposal to make this happen? How can users' demands and wishes be catered for most naturally?

Communication between different cultures in different languages has become increasingly important. Interaction between people has become more internationally oriented and therefore multicultural and in multilingual. In the English Master's specialization Intercultural Communication you will learn about the influences of internationalization and multiculturalism on language and interaction. You will study this in a wide range of social contexts.
