The famous Herman Boerhaave became Professor of Chemistry in 1718. Since then, many internationally acclaimed chemists have contributed to research and education in chemistry at Leiden University. Today, the Leiden Institute of Chemistry houses all the different research groups. The institute is surrounded by a science park with high-tech industries and several other institutes. This setting facilitates interdisciplinary research in physics, biology, pharmaceutical and medical sciences.
The programme offers four tracks, which correspond with major research themes in the Institute: Biological Chemistry, Design & Synthesis, Physical & Theoretical Chemistry.
The MSc programme guarantees thorough research training founded on a profound theoretical basis. The strength of the programme is its individual approach: for each student a tailor-made programme will be designed. Students in Leiden work in an environment with many international researchers and can operate on the international market.
