Program description

University College Utrecht (UCU) is an international honors college of Utrecht University (Shanghai ranking: best Dutch university) in the Netherlands.

UCU specializes in liberal arts and sciences undergraduate education, and students compose a personal curriculum from 200 different courses in humanities, science and social science. The UCU approach is personal: classes are small and participation is actively encouraged. The admissions process is highly selective: students are admitted on the basis of academic excellence, but an international focus, social engagement and extracurricular pursuits are of equal importance. All 650 students (40% international) live on campus in the historic city of Utrecht.

Educational Philosophy
University College Utrecht offers education in Liberal Arts and Sciences. According to the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) “Liberal education is an educational philosophy rather than a body of knowledge, specific courses, or type of institution. By drawing on a broad range of knowledge, it asks students to grapple with complicated, important issues, and usually expects them to learn about at least one subject in greater depth and at an advanced level. Intellectual growth occurs as both broad and deep learning challenge previously held beliefs.”

This quotation says a lot about the educational philosophy at University College Utrecht is about. Students are to a large extent responsible for forming their own curriculum; driven by their own motivation for learning and their ambitions. Students can take courses from three areas of expertise: Humanities, Sciences and Social Sciences.

Courses in Humanities
At University College Utrecht students can take courses in Humanities, ranging from History, Philosophy, Languages, Literature, Classics to Religious Studies, Art History/Museum Studies and Performing Arts. Aim of these courses it to provide students with various insights into existential issues of mankind. Students will also acquire the basic skills such as: critical reading, analysis, and interpretation of sources within the relevant cultural historical context.

Courses in Science
The Science Department at University College Utrecht offers courses in: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Earth and Environment, Life Science, Cognitive Neuroscience, and Medical Science. The aim of these courses is to acquaint students with the underlying principles and laws, which govern all aspects of nature. The Science Department of University College Utrecht offers unique combinations of disciplines. Examples of such combinations are: Mathematics & Philosophy, Biology & Law, Evolution & Religion, Biotechnology & Developmental Studies and Modern & Traditional Medicine.

Courses in Social Sciences
Social Sciences help us understand what drives (modern) society. Students at University College Utrecht will acquire knowledge that helps them solve societal and cultural issues. Courses include: Sociology, Psychology, Anthropology, Geography, Political Science, Law, and Economics. Law students get the opportunity to study abroad for a semester at Washington University in St. Louis.

Admission requirements

Previous education

Applicants must have a Dutch high school diploma at VWO level (any profile) or a foreign equivalent, such as the International Baccalaureate diploma or the British A-levels.

Grade average

Applicants must demonstrate academic excellence and curiosity.

Written request

The application includes a motivation letter.

Assessment interview

Applicants who meet the basic requirements are invited to an interview.

Language test

Since English is the official language at UCU, non-native speakers are required to demonstrate proof of proficiency. Accepted are the IELTS test, TOEFL test and Cambridge Certificate. Students with an International Baccalaureate or European Baccalaureate
