Program description

International Civil Engineering Management is part of the Bachelor study programme Civil Engineering and focuses on on environment, water management, bridges, harbours, roads, dikes and flyovers.

International Civil Engineering Management combines a thorough theoretical basis with practical experience. You will visit building projects, work on realistic problems taken from professional practice and regularly attend lectures by guest speakers. You will also receive project management module while following this programme to help you to manage civil engineering projects both at home and abroad.

International Civil Engineering Management is a two-year bachelor program resulting in a professional Bachelor degree.

Then the program International Civil Engineering Management (ICEM) of Hanze (UAS) will certainly appeal to you. As you are abroad for long periods of time, you acquire more than just knowledge about civil engineering. With this degree in your pocket, you are ready for the international job market.

The International Civil Engineering Management program educates you to become a civil engineer. Engineers trained in the Netherlands are in high repute abroad. That is why one encounters Dutch contractors and engineering firms on many European projects. In order to work successfully as a civil engineer in foreign countries, you of course have to learn to speak the language there. But you must also be acquainted with the way of working and the company culture in other countries. In that way you learn to be in charge of civil engineering projects both at home and abroad.

International Civil Engineering Management Program Content

The first semester of the second year will be spent doing a work placement in a Dutch company. The second semester, however, concentrates on your final project which involves writing your thesis in a project group.

During term 5 and 6 one studies in the Netherlands, while term 7 is dedicated to a work placement in that country. There are two varieties of term 8: one may graduate either in Groningen or at one’s home institute. In the latter case, the graduation work is evaluated by lecturers from the home institute as well as from Hanze University of Applied Sciences (Hanze UAS) Groningen.

Full-time (120 ECTS credits), 2 years. This programme at Hanze University Groningen constitutes the final two years of a four-year bachelor degree programme. For very talented students also a one-year programme is possible, after 3 years of study. Degree awarded: Bachelor of Built Environment.

Student can choose from subjects like: construction management, Harbor & coastal engineering, Water resource management, Dredging technology, Specialization in steel and concrete Construction.

International Civil Engineering Management Program Objectives

The International Civil Engineering Management program’s main objective is to provide education that enables graduates to work as managers of building and civil engineering projects all over Europe.

Graduates are able to fulfill tasks in all of the construction process’ phases. They can cooperate and communicate in both English and Dutch with all the persons involved in the process, and of course also in the graduate’s own language. Students are able to fully appreciate the various differences between construction engineering in their native country and in other European countries, particularly in the Netherlands.

Civil engineering managers are equipped to work in an internationally oriented firm of contractors, in a consultancy or a government agency that contracts out and supervises large civil engineering projects.

Previous education

The entry requirements depend on the programme you are currently studying. In general, students who have completed a minimum of four semesters at undergraduate level in construction
engineering/building science or civil engineering are eligible for the
International Civil Engineering Management programme.
