This English taught programme focuses on developing and improving electronics-based systems. You will work on high-tech applications, such as robot arms for surgery or sensors for health applications.
The University of Twente's Electrical Engineering bachelor's programme teaches you how modern technology works and how we can use it to further improve, accelerate or scale down electronics-based systems. Your work and commitment will result in high-tech applications based on nanotechnology, robotics, electronics and communication technology.
Programme-specific developments include lab-on-a-chip, methods for building faster and better computers, chips that can be used to carry out a pregnancy test, and sensors for application in communication. You will be challenged to improve high-tech systems with an emphasis on themes such as sustainability, health, safety and energy. You will use knowledge from the fields of computer science, physics and mathematics and become acquainted with the full range of electronic components.
The programme will develop your skills in research, design and organization, enabling you to discover where your own strengths are. All of the systems we use today rely on information processing, electronics and computers. As an electrical engineer, you can use your high-tech expertise to work towards a safer, healthier and more sustainable world.
Electrical Engineering Program Objectives
The bachelor program in Electrical Engineering focuses on the development of electro technical solutions in the application areas energy technique, information technique, telecommunication, information and communication systems and measuring and control systems. Energy technique comprises the generation, transport, conversion, distribution and application of electrical energy. Information technique comprises the acquisition (with sensors), conversion, transport, storage, processing (with computer architectures and processors), combination and presentation or automatic use of usually electronic information (e.g. when regulating processed).
Telecommunication centres on systems and networks for telephony, media, data transport, satellite communication and mobile communication. Information and communication systems regard the analysis, design and realisation of computer systems and the development of electronic switches during the course of which neural networks are used. Measuring and control systems are system that regulate all sorts of processes, like the control of airplanes, central heating at home and processes in the human body (medical applications). After this training you can enter the labour market or you can opt for a master's degree.
Electrical Engineering Career Prospects
Electrical engineers are highly employable, largely because they aren’t trained in a specific vocation but are qualified in a specific branch of science.
You can choose your own field and working environment. You could choose to work as a systems designer or project manager, for instance, or you could opt for research in one of the industry’s research and development labs or a semi-public organization such as research centers or a hospital.
Another alternative would be a job as a consultant or teacher at an engineering consultancy or in secondary, higher or adult education.
Whichever branch you choose, you will be welcomed with open arms. The demand for electrical engineers is set to rise, particularly in view of the spectacular boom in the information technology industry. Employment prospects in this field are excellent and the opportunities are endless.
Many Electrical Engineering graduates end up working in large national organizations such as KPN, Lucent Technologies, Philips or Ericsson. Others choose smaller companies or engineering consultancies, hospitals, patenting agencies or software companies. So as you see, a job in an electrical engineering company is not your only option with a degree in electrical engineering!
