University description

The University of Groningen, founded in 1614, has claimed its spot among the prominent research universities in Europe. It enjoys great international esteem because of its wide variety of high quality English taught bachelor, master and PhD degree programs. The University of Groningen is located in the North of the Netherlands in the student friendly, mediaeval and picturesque city of Groningen.

Groningen offers over sixty bachelor programs and more than 100 master and research master programmes in practically any academic field. It continually tests the quality of its courses against the highest international standards. Study programs are therefore evaluated on a regular basis. Groningen believes it should stimulate academic excellence among its students. It therefore organizes honours courses for both bachelor and master students who show exceptional quality.



Groningen’s has invested heavily in a prominent international partner network. Students and researchers get the chance to study or work at the following top institutions: Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium), Aarhus University (Denmark), Universite Paul Cezanne (France), Eberhard Karls Universitat Tubingen (Germany), Lund in Sweden, University College London, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (USA).

Groningen is part of the European elite with a spot in the top 10 ranking of European research universities. In the prominent QS and Times Higher Education rankings it holds a place in the top 150 (QS: 115th place, THE: 134th place). In the Shanghai Jiao Tong ranking (ARWU), Groningen is a top 100 player in the fields of Chemistry (51st place) and Economics (76th place). In the Thomson Reuters Essential Science Indicator, it ranks 56th in the world.
