University description
Radboud University Nijmegen: a leading academic community
Radboud University Nijmegen is one of the leading academic communities in the Netherlands with a strong focus on research. Renowned for its green campus in the oldest city of the Netherlands, it enrolls over 19,000 students in 107 study programmes, of which 2 Bachelor’s tracks and 32 Master’s programmes fully taught in English. Also, there are good opportunities to do PhD research. The University has an international focus, with more than 10% of students coming from abroad.
Small-scale classes and room for personal development
The university has adopted a student oriented teaching style. Characteristic of this approach is instruction in study groups, the organization of existing courses as a series of study tasks, and creating room for individual responsibility and independence. Radboud encourages students to carry out research themselves under supervision of a personal tutor and, above all, to look further than the confines of their own discipline.
Nobel prize for Physics
In 2010, two professors connected to Radboud University won the Nobel Prize for Physics. Professor Konstantin Novoselov and Professor Andre Geim won the prize for their research into the properties of graphene, the thinnest material in the world. Radboud is the fastest rising Dutch University in the major international rankings.
Nijmegen, a student-friendly city
Nijmegen is a true university city with a variety of restaurants and cafés. The cultural centre LUX – the largest art house cinema in the Netherlands – also offers theatre, music, debate, and multimedia. The city is the oldest city in the Netherlands, dating back to Roman times. Today, it has some 165,000 inhabitants, 30,000 of whom are students.
Initiator of the International Research Universities Network (IRUN)
Radboud’s international partners include: the University of Barcelona (Spain), Siena (Italy), Glasgow (Scotland), California/Berkeley (USA), Boston (USA) and Pontifical (Peru). The increasing importance of international networks has lead to the set up of Radboud’s own research network, the International Research Universities Network (IRUN). The aim of IRUN is to further improve the quality of research and teaching at the universities involved.
