Leiden University is the oldest university in the Netherlands, founded in 1575. The university takes a multi-disciplinary approach to education and research. Fundamental research is combined with a focus on issues in contemporary society. This approach has lead to high international acclaim. The university has brought forth a number of Nobel Prize laureates.

With over 50 bachelor programs and nearly 80 English taught master programs, Leiden University is a comprehensive institution. Education is centered on 7 core areas: Archaeology, Humanities, Medicine, Law, Social Sciences and Science. More and more international students come to study in Leiden each year. Currently around 15% of the student body is of non-Dutch origin. Leiden has 1600 international students.

Leiden University has a broad international partner network. Partner universities include: King’s College (UK), University of Oxford (UK) and the University of California (USA). This allows students to go on an exchange to one of these top universities. Leiden University has always been active on the international stage. It was one of the founding members of LERU, the prestigious League of European Research Universities.
In terms of university rankings, Leiden is one of the best performing institutes in the Netherlands. Currently it holds 79th place in the Times ranking and 88th place in the QS ranking. Leiden scores particularly well in Arts and Humanities (37th place), Social Sciences (78th) and Natural Sciences (80th).
