Program description
Photography Program The Master programme Photography at AKV|St.Joost is a unique program: it is the only one of its kind in the Netherlands where you can continue your studies in photography on a Masters level. Point of departure is the documentary discours and the relationship photography has with reality.
Students have an international outlook and come from both the Netherlands and abroad. They are being coached by leading teachers and guest teachers from various nationalities. In an inspiring environment students are trained to become photographers with a strong vision and a well developed practise.
The Photography programme is a place for reflection on and debate about documentary photography. The documentary concept, which is an essential element of photography, is one of the main subjects of discussion and research in the programme. The focus is on new forms of photography in the relatively autonomous contexts of the photo book, the exhibition, the moving image or the Internet project.
Your own projects and personal research question are leading in this. You will learn how to position yourself on a conceptual level in the international professional field. You will meet key figures from the field and, finally, you will present your own project in a professional context. Links with other media such as the moving image, web projects and fine arts are explored in various ways.
Projects and Career Training
Students frequently participate in projects featuring exhibitions, publications and debates. These may be initiated by students themselves or on the request of a client or third party. Examples of external presentations are Civilians in Uniform (FotoFestival Naarden, 2003), Documentaire Nu! (Nederlands Fotomuseum/TENT. Rotterdam, 2005) and A Family Affair (Dordrechts Museum, 2002 en 2007). Graduation projects are always presented at locations with high exposure to the professional field. In the past, presentations have been held at Las Palmas, the Dutch Photo Museum, TENT. and MKgalerie.nl, all in Rotterdam.
