Program description

The Research Master's in Linguistics is a specialised research-based programme run by the Leiden University Centre for Linguistics (LUCL).

Tapping into the vast array of languages taught and studied at Leiden—more than at any other academic institution in the Netherlands or neighbouring countries—you will have access to internationally-renowned research programmes led by senior researchers, many of whom have been awarded prestigious academic grants.

As a graduate of a two-year research master's degree you are qualified to work as a junior academic researcher in an academic environment or carry out further research work on a PhD programme.

What can you expect from the programme? At the core of LUCL you'll discover academic excellence, diversity and research. With a strong tradition in applying various approaches to language variation and language change—in syntax, phonology, semantics and other fields—you will concentrate on developing your academic path through original research. Each year, for example, LUCL appoints five to ten PhD students, mostly within externally-funded projects, who continue the research methods they were taught in the MPhil programme. In addition, numerous conferences, workshops and lecture series are organised and attended by the faculty's multi-national staff and student body.
