Program description

The two-year Research Master's programme Art Studies lets you dig deeper into the part of the (art)world where your interests lie. It is an intensive scientific programme.

The two year Research programme Art Studies gives you the freedom to follow your own line of study.The programme Art Studies comprises two specialisations: Artistic Research; Golden Age Studies. Students submit a research proposal before the start of the programme. This, along with discussions with the programme director, forms the basis for the course of study. In the research proposal students write down their ideas for tutorials, a thesis and the three electives they wish to take. The electives can be chosen from the programmes Cultural Studies (Algemene cultuurwetenschappen), Art History (Kunstgeschiedenis), Musicology (Muziekwetenschap) or Theatre Studies (Theaterwetenschap). All students attend three core courses, which provide a theoretical background in Art Studies.

De selectieprocedure voor de researchmaster is toegankelijk voor studenten met een bachelordiploma van de UvA of een gelijkwaardig, erkend diploma van een andere universiteit:
- Algemene cultuurwetenschappen
- Boekwetenschap en handschriftenkunde
- Kunstgeschiedenis
- Theaterwetenschap
- Muziekwetenschap

Previous education

The Research Master’s in Art Studies is open to all students with a Bachelor’s diploma from the UvA, or a recognised equivalent from another accredited university in
- Cultural Studies
- Book Studies and Paleography
- Art History
- Theatre Studies
- Musicology
The level of the Bachelor’s diploma from a foreign higher education institution must be equal to three years of Dutch university education (to be judged by the Examinations Board).
Prospective students with Bachelor’s degrees (university) other than those mentioned above can nonetheless apply for admission to the programme. The Examinations Board will in such cases take a look at the content of the prospective student’s Bachelor programme, his/her study results and general motivation.

Aanmelden voor de selectieprocedure van deze research master kan van 1 december tot uiterlijk 1 april via de website van de Graduate School of Humanities.
