Health care appeals to you. You love working with people and you would like to mean something to them. Should you feel that this applies to you, then Physiotherapy might be right up your street.
The Physiotherapy Bachelor degree program will teach you about the functioning and dysfunctioning of the human body in relation to its surroundings. You will acquire practical and theoretical knowledge on how you can help orthopaedic/rheumatologic, neurological and cardiopulmonary patients. The programme is exceptionally practice-oriented and evidencebased. In addition to learning subjects related to physiotherapy, the programme also includes medical and psychosocial subjects. Physiotherapists work in physiotherapy practices (including their own practices), in health centres and hospitals, but also for large companies. The Dutch Physiotherapy Diploma is highly recognized internationally and you will therefore come across Dutchtrained physiotherapists throughout Europe and the rest of the world.
The Physiotherapy program at Hanze University Groningen is unique in the way it integrates theory and daily practice from day one. All competencies you need as a future physiotherapist are offered to you in a practical and integrated way. Many of our teachers are also physiotherapists themselves. In this way we bring practice literally into our school.
Physiotherapy is taught in a four-year daytime course, training students to be a Bachelor of Physiotherapy. It is the only Bachelor program of its kind in the North of the Netherlands, so that every year there are more applications than available places.
The Physiotherapy program can be characterized as a professional allied health program. In order to guarantee that your knowledge meets the criteria set by the professional field, these criteria are translated into competencies.
Your education revolves around the development of these competencies, e.g.:
- working methodically and applying clinical-based thinking;
- providing interested parties with information on prevention;
- performing research;
- adopting a professional attitude;
- communicating with others in your field, and with other health professionals.
The Physiotherapy program is a four-year program (240 EC). Each year is divided into two semesters and each semester into two blocks (see the Blocks schedule below). During these blocks, you will have approximately 17 contact hours per week; independent learning and practical training fill the remaining hours. The theoretical part is offered in small tutorial groups (12 students). An assessment takes place at the end of each block.
Year 1 and Year 2
During the first year (Dutch: propedeuse) preparing the student for his later profession occupies a central position. With the help of various categories of patients, medical-biological and physiotherapeutic subjects pass under review. You will also start studying subjects such as psychology, sociology, psychopathology and communication skills. After your first year, you will get binding advice about the continuation of your studies, based on your actual study results.
Year 3 and Year 4
The third and the fourth years are characterized by internships, studying in greater width and depth and doing a graduating project. You will also do three ten-week internships.
Health care appeals to you. You love working with people and you would like to mean something to them.
