Universities from the Netherlands (Holland) stand for quality of education and research. This is reflected in their position in the international university rankings. Dutch Universities also have a reputation for spearheading the development and introduction of new teaching methods. International students may therefore expect an intellectually challenging learning environment where independent ideation is encouraged. There are 3 types of universities in the Netherlands:

Universities in the Netherlands (Holland) come in 3 shapes. There are traditional research universities that focus on scientific education and research. Universities of Applied Sciences are schools for professional education that can be compared to the German Fachhochschule or Vocational Colleges in the US. The last category is formed by Institutes for International Education. These institutes are highly specialized and are usually part of a research university.

Research Universities in the Netherlands

Research Universities from the Netherlands (Holland) are amongst the best performing institutes in the world according to the university rankings. They offer top class academic education and research, preparing students for professional or scientific careers. International students make up around 10% of the total student body in the Netherlands.

Degree programs offered:
  • Bachelor: 3 year programs leading to a BA, BSc. Or LLB degree
  • Master: 1 or 2 year programs leading to a MA, MSc, L.LM or MBA degree
  • PhD: 4 year programs leading to a Doctoral or PhD degree

Universities of Applied Sciences

Universities of Applied Sciences are schools of professional education. They have adopted a practice-oriented approach; skills development is the focal point in their curriculum. Students will do a mandatory internship during their studies to gain work experience. Because they are well prepared for the labor market, they readily find employment after graduation. This is why Universities of Applied Sciences are very popular among international students.

  • Bachelor: 4 year programs leading to a bachelor degree
  • Master: 1 or 2 year programs leading to a master degree

Institutes for International Education

Institutes for International Education are centers of excellence that offer academic training and research programs. The majority of programs focus on action learning, which means that skills and knowledge are immediately applicable to real life situations. Education at these institutes is always in English and is conducted by seasoned professionals.
